Privacy and data location

BigBlueButton keeps recordings, chat and attendance on the server that hosts it, so you choose the country. MynaParrot hosting is the usual option; your partner can also host it on servers you choose.

Google Meet runs in Google's cloud. With Google Workspace Data Regions you can keep Meet recordings, attendance reports, polling results and transcripts at rest in the US or Europe, on supported editions (for example Business Standard and above, Education Standard and Plus). Google says Data Regions is not supported for Education Fundamentals [4].

Cost model (no prices)

  • BigBlueButton: free open-source software. You pay hosting, set-up and support, agreed with your partner.
  • Google Meet: included in Google Workspace editions (per-user subscription for business; education editions for schools); limits and features depend on the edition [2][4].

When to choose the other option

Choose Google Meet if everyone already has a Google Workspace account, you teach with Google Classroom, and you don't need classes inside Moodle or Chamilo. It also saves you running anything on your own servers.
