Questions people ask before choosing
Short answers to common questions, with a link to the full answer and to the solution it relates to.
What is a virtual classroom and how does it work?
A virtual classroom is an online space where a teacher and learners meet live, see and hear each other, and work with shared material such as slides and a whiteboard. With most current tools, learners join from a browser link, often from inside the course, without installing anything.
How is plugNmeet different from BigBlueButton?
Both are open-source virtual classrooms that run in the browser and work with Moodle; they differ in licence, recording format, built-in streaming and AI features. plugNmeet is maintained by MynaParrot and offers a BigBlueButton-compatible API, which can make switching simpler, although existing recordings stay on the old server.
Does Moodle have video conferencing built in?
Partly: standard Moodle includes a BigBlueButton activity, but not the video server that runs the live sessions. The site administrator connects it to the free service for Moodle (which has strict limits), to their own BigBlueButton server or to a hosting provider.
How do I download a BigBlueButton recording as an MP4?
By default, BigBlueButton plays recordings back in an interactive browser player, so there is no single file to download. A server administrator can enable the optional video format, which produces one video file (MP4 is a configuration option); on a hosted service, it depends on what the provider allows.
How can I track attendance in live online classes in Moodle?
You can combine Moodle's logs, the free Attendance plugin (a manual or self-declared record) and the attendance data some video tools record, such as connection times. Which one is enough depends on whether you need attendance for your own follow-up, for a certificate or as evidence for an external funder.
Can Moodle detect cheating in an online quiz?
Not on its own: a standard Moodle quiz can't see other tabs, programs or people in the room, but it records attempt times, responses and IP addresses that teachers can review. Settings such as time limits, random questions and Safe Exam Browser make cheating harder, although no technical measure stops it completely.
What is a webinar, and how is it different from a meeting?
A webinar is a live online presentation: one or a few presenters speak to an audience that mainly watches and listens, and interacts through chat, Q&A and polls. In a meeting everyone can talk and share, while in a virtual class the teacher leads and learners take part.
Can a virtual classroom course be funded by FUNDAE?
Yes: for company-programmed training in 2026, SEPE's resolution (BOE-A-2025-25790) allows in-person training to be delivered through a virtual classroom if it is synchronous and two-way, the application produces a connection log, and control bodies can connect during the class. These measures are renewed every year, and meeting the technical requirements helps but does not guarantee funding.
