Moodle vs Canvas: Open-Source LMS Comparison

Moodle vs Canvas: a fair comparison of the Moodle™ software and Canvas LMS open-source editions — licences, add-ons, privacy and cost model. Request a demo.

Short answer

  • The Moodle™ software is best for schools, academies and companies that want a mature open-source LMS with a large plugin directory, a long-term support (LTS) release, and live classes built in.
  • Canvas LMS is best for institutions that want Instructure's commercial Canvas service, or teams able to run the open-source edition knowing some Instructure features aren't included in it.

Privacy and data location

Both are self-hostable, so the data stays on the server and in the country you choose. MynaParrot hosting is preferred; your partner can also host on your servers. If you use Instructure's hosted Canvas instead, data terms are set by Instructure.

Cost model (no prices)

  • Moodle™ software: free open-source software. You pay hosting, set-up, plugins (most are free), training and support, agreed with your partner.
  • Canvas LMS open source: free software, but a heavier server stack to run [6]; set-up and support agreed with your partner. Instructure's own Canvas is a paid subscription [2].

When to choose the other option

Choose Canvas if your institution already uses Instructure's Canvas, your teachers know it, or you need features only in Instructure's hosted service (such as New Quizzes or New Analytics). In that case Instructure's offer may suit you better than self-hosting.
