Online exam software that keeps assessment fair

Moving exams online raises two questions straight away: how do I build and grade them without extra work, and how do I stop students from cheating? Generic form tools handle the first badly and the second not at all.

Where online exams go wrong

  • Questions are copied between students because everyone sees the same test in the same order.
  • There's no reliable time limit, or it's easy to get around.
  • Grading is manual and results are scattered across spreadsheets.
  • For high-stakes exams, nobody can see what's happening on the other side of the screen.

What you get with Online Exams

Online exams built on Moodle Quiz, set up by an implementation partner:

Already on Canvas LMS or Chamilo? Mention it in the demo form and we'll show you the options in an online meeting.

  • Timed exams that close automatically when time runs out.
  • Question banks and random questions, so each student can get a different set, in a different order.
  • Automatic grading for objective questions, with clear results for teachers and students.
  • Access controls your partner can configure, such as a password, a set exam window and limited attempts.
  • Live video supervision. Run the exam alongside a Video Classroom session so invigilators can see candidates on webcam.
  • Proctoring is available on request.

Fair, not paranoid

No tool removes cheating completely. A good setup combines exam design (random questions, time limits, one attempt) with supervision where it's needed. Your implementation partner helps you find the right balance for each type of assessment, from weekly quizzes to final exams.

Who it's for

Universities, schools, academies, professional associations and organisations that run qualifying exams.

How it works, step by step

1. Your implementation partner sets up the exam tools in Moodle. 2. Teachers build a question bank and create an exam with a time limit, an exam window and limited attempts. 3. Each student gets random questions in a different order, and the exam is submitted automatically when time runs out. 4. For the exams that matter most, your partner adds live webcam supervision through a video classroom. 5. Objective questions are graded automatically. Teachers mark open answers and share the results.

Frequently asked questions

How do online exams prevent cheating?

With a mix of exam design and supervision: random questions from a question bank, shuffled answers, a strict time limit, limited attempts and, for important exams, live webcam supervision through a video classroom. Your implementation partner helps you choose the right level for each exam.

Can exams be graded automatically?

Yes. Objective question types such as multiple choice, true/false and matching are graded automatically. Open answers can still be marked by the teacher.

Is online proctoring available?

Proctoring is available on request. Your partner explains the options and what they involve for privacy.

Can we use the LMS we already have?

Exams run on Moodle Quiz. If you use another platform, your partner can link your exams to it through LTI where it supports it, or move your questions across. Already on Canvas LMS or Chamilo? Mention it in the demo form and we'll show you the options.

What does it cost?

It depends on your exams, your number of candidates and the work involved. Your implementation partner sends you one written proposal covering the technology and their services.
