Can I track attendance of live online classes in Moodle?

Yes, in three ways that can be combined. Which one is enough depends on why you need attendance: for your own follow-up, for a certificate, or as evidence for an external funder.

1. Moodle logs. Moodle records when a user opens a course activity, including joining a live session from it. Logs show that someone clicked "join", not how long they stayed, so they are weak evidence on their own.

2. The Attendance plugin (mod_attendance). A free plugin from the Moodle plugins directory, installed on more than 20,000 sites according to its plugin page. The teacher creates sessions and marks each learner as Present, Absent, Late or Excused, and reports can be exported. It is simple and flexible, but it is a manual or self-declared record, not an automatic one.

3. Attendance data from the video tool. Some video platforms record who connected and for how long:

  • plugNmeet's Moodle plugin can use cumulative attendance minutes, chat messages, webcam use and poll votes as conditions for activity completion, and stores analytics files per session.
  • BigBlueButton can produce learning-analytics data; what you see in Moodle depends on your server and version.
  • Zoom reports participants in its own reports.

Tip for funded training in Spain: FUNDAE's 2026 rules for aula virtual require a log generated by the virtual classroom application showing participants, dates and connection times for each training action. A manually marked attendance sheet does not replace that. Check that your tool can export this log before the course starts.

Whatever you use, tell learners what is recorded, and keep it only as long as you need it.
